As an Applied Science student, you will put your learning into practice straight away by taking part in assignments set in real-life situations, developing practical skills and knowledge that employers will love.
You will build on your previous studies of science by widening your knowledge of the scientific investigation and practical techniques; working as an individual and in small groups on research projects. We will help you to develop the numeracy skills required in a scientific setting, find out about working in the science industry and examine perceptions of science in the wider community.
Our Applied Science course will help you develop a firm grasp of these concepts and enable you to use and apply this knowledge and understanding in vocational contexts; leading to a career in a huge range of areas including biological science, nursing and laboratory technician.

Course Content
You will gain a strong grasp of core science concepts and be introduced to standard
laboratory equipment and techniques. Through practical tasks you will develop proficiency in quantitative analytical techniques. You will also learn the essential skills underpinning practical scientific investigation.
Students studying the Diploma will go onto investigate a scientific organization, gaining an understanding of how it operates. The range of core science concepts will be built upon and this knowledge will be applied to vocational contexts. You will also undertake your own investigative project comprised of a scientific literature review, planning, practical work and an evaluative report.

Special Feature
Diplomas students will be invited to participate in the Career Ready STEM masterclasses which connects young people with local employers and volunteers who provide them with the skills, knowledge, and inspiration they need to kick-start rewarding futures.
Visits to employers have included NHS, EDF and Suez.
Entry requirements
- At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 including GCSE English.
- Grade 5 in two GCSE Sciences or Grade 5,5 in GCSE Combined Science.
- Grade 5 in GCSE Maths.

After Long Road
Qualifications in Applied Science can lead to a career in a range of areas including forensic, medical, laboratory or industrial science, depending on the specialist units taught.
The course also provides progression to higher education courses such as forensic chemistry, biological sciences or audiology.
Students who recently completed the course are studying Forensic Science, also at Anglia Ruskin, Climate Change at the University of East Anglia, Biology at Lincoln University, Diagnostic Radiography at Suffolk University and Palaeontology at Portsmouth University.
